These are just crazy.Advertising today is everywhere, and it's pretty sneaky about how it tries to sell you a lifestyle or make you feel inadequate enough to buy products. Ads used to be much more blatant about their mission. In fact, advertisers in the '50s and '60s were not shy at all about making women feel bad in order to sell products. They would flat-out blame women. Got a cheating husband? Must be because you're not taking good enough care of your skin. Love life cooling off? Perhaps it's because of your feminine odor. Husband an evil monster who knocks you about? Clearly you're not making him a delicious enough dinner using the latest appliances.
Some of the stuff in these ads would never fly today. Some if it still happens today, but the messages are much more sly and sneaky. Advertisers back in the day were just going buck wild. Who knows how many women developed the "feminine mystique" that led to the second wave of feminism because of the BS in these ads. They portray women as objects whose only jobs are to cook, clean, and be beautiful. No wonder women were feeling unfulfilled.
Let's take a tour of some of the most offensive ads of that era and feel all that outrage that pushed the women's movement forward. You're so much more than your pot roast and lipstick! Get Started
